Maha Kathin Chibar Daan - 2019 at Agartala

Maha Kathin Chibar Daan - 2019 at Agartala

This year the Day is going to be really special, for all Chakma Buddhists in Agartala. For the first time Maha Kathin Chibar Daan is going to be organised at Saddhamma Bana Vihar, Chanmari, Agartala. It is not a big deal for other places like Chhamanu, Manikpur, Chhailengta, Nabinchera, for the Bana Viharas there have been organising such events every year.

The event is scheduled for 18-19th October, 2019. It means lot of hard work, lot involvement of the practitioners. Twenty-four hours time is all to complete the process - spinning (to get thread) on charkha, rolling of thread, raising the weaving structure, weaving, cutting, stitching to colouring - and lastly the final product i.e. Kathin Chibar to be offered to the Bhikkhu Sangha. To maintain the time-cycle properly expert weavers are supposed to come from the villages to take part in it.

It is not only an expression of religious fervour, but also a preservation of culture for the Chakma Buddhists who are one of the 19 tribes found in Tripura. On the 19th the process of weaving will be inaugurated by Nandapal Mahasthavir and the next day it will be dedicated to his Sangha.

Kathin Chibar Daan, an annual affair comes along with other frills like Sangha Daan, Atta Parikkhar Daana, offering thousand lights in the name of Buddha, releasing fenas batti (sky lamp), procession and so on. These days trend is like - every Bana Vihara is trying to emulate the other in terms of pomp and number of items.

Hope this great day brings a lot of happiness and good fortune for all. All are invited to enjoy the event.

The train journey from Agartala to Kumarghat,  a subdivision in Unakoti District was mooth, although the Agartala--Dharmanagar local moved from the starting point a bit late, around 6.45 a.m. instead of 6.15 am. I have been travelling by this train for quite sometime now but never experienced a delay like this. Anyways rest was smooth. As directed by my ...

A day out in an Ampi village

A day out in rural Khowai

Life has become really hectic these days. I am yet to connect the last cord in my PhD project, if I consider it as a project ever. My office needs me more these days as I am bound to complete a four--page e-newspaper daily; it is really tough when other schemes come along from different sources of the office. However, Sanjib and Partha have been great sources of support for that. In between that my traveller mind always pokes me to get out of the house whenever a petty chance comes up. Last Sunday I was out with Bibhuti and team - to the rural Khowai. For those who don't have ideas about Khowai let me tell you it's one of the eight districts of Tripura. Khowai itself is a sub-division also. Earlier I have seen the urban part of Khowai only while shuttling between Agartala and Kailashahar to meet my brother. The famous (for us) tea-stall in front of the police station, the welcoming kettle just at the entry point of Khowai, Khowai district hospital - all used to come in our r...
