FMD vaccination in Tripura

When the world is struggling hard to cope with the COVID-19 menace reports of various viral and infectious diseases keep coming from different parts of the world. Recently it was interesting to know that some 47 goats were put in quarantine in a Karnataka village as the owner tested positive. It was done on apprehension that they might develop the disease. But every year many cattle and other livestock die of various animal diseases. One common syndrome is developing sore in foot and mouth. taking note of this the government has taken measures to check this by administering vaccination on them.

Right now in Tripura also vaccination of cattle is going on. It is being implemented as part of the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. It is a totally centrally sponsored scheme and aims at vaccinating over 500 million cattle. On July 10, 2020 one such FMD vaccination camp was organised by the animal resources development department in Longtharai Valley sub-division in Dhalai district, Tripura, India.

Under the programme cattle are not only vaccinated but also tagged. It reminds me of girl children forced to get their ear lobes pierced by the parents. Here the cattle owners take their to such camps to get their cattle vaccinated to fight against FMD. The hapless animal try to run away but give in to human collective strength. This view can make anyone jittery.

Anyway the measure is for the good of the animals as well as the farmer, as the government targets to double their income by the year 2022. Let us hope the target is achieved before the deadline, for India is an agrarian nation.

A trip to Kailashahar

The train journey from Agartala to Kumarghat,  a subdivision in Unakoti District was mooth, although the Agartala--Dharmanagar local moved from the starting point a bit late, around 6.45 a.m. instead of 6.15 am. I have been travelling by this train for quite sometime now but never experienced a delay like this. Anyways rest was smooth. As directed by my ...

A day out in an Ampi village

A day out in rural Khowai

Life has become really hectic these days. I am yet to connect the last cord in my PhD project, if I consider it as a project ever. My office needs me more these days as I am bound to complete a four--page e-newspaper daily; it is really tough when other schemes come along from different sources of the office. However, Sanjib and Partha have been great sources of support for that. In between that my traveller mind always pokes me to get out of the house whenever a petty chance comes up. Last Sunday I was out with Bibhuti and team - to the rural Khowai. For those who don't have ideas about Khowai let me tell you it's one of the eight districts of Tripura. Khowai itself is a sub-division also. Earlier I have seen the urban part of Khowai only while shuttling between Agartala and Kailashahar to meet my brother. The famous (for us) tea-stall in front of the police station, the welcoming kettle just at the entry point of Khowai, Khowai district hospital - all used to come in our r...
